The project is about utilization of insects, specifically Black Soldier Fly, H. illucens, (BSF) in the bioconversion of organic wastes such as, but not limited to, household wastes, market wastes, agri-byproducts, animal manure, etc. The innovation will harness BSF larvae’s potential in sequestering all the nutrients from the organic wastes and returning them back into agricultural inputs such as the frass/excreta as organic fertilizer and BSF larvae as animal feed to close the loop in the food value chain.
This project aims to establish a waste bioconversion module/system for various organic wastes using Black Soldier Fly through the optimization of protocols for BSF mass-rearing/breeding, larvae grow-out, and post-harvest processing of larvae and organic compost.
